Referring your child for intervention

Book your child's assessment

To discuss your child's unique needs or book an assessment, you can either fill out our referral form or call the office on 02 4739 0267 and ask for our director Susan Lowe.

Assessment

After a referral has been made, your child will be booked in for an assessment with one of the therapists at the practice. Parents and teacher questionnaires are provided in order that we can gain information about your child’s performance in the real world of home and school. An assessment report will be written following the assessment. Your child can then be booked in for intervention, if recommended by the therapist, at a frequency or intensity of your choice. Parents can choose weekly or fortnightly frequency as well as half hour or hour intensity for intervention sessions.

Referral

Skills for Kids accept referrals from a wide range of sources including:

• Parents (self-referral)
• Family doctors and paediatricians
• Classroom teachers, education support teachers and school counsellors
• Other professionals such as speech pathologists and psychologists

Specific reasons for referral for intervention may include:

• Developmental assessment
• School readiness
• Fine motor skills
• Handwriting and writing
• Gross motor skills
• Sensory integration
• Social skills
• Self care skills
• Transition to preschool, primary or high school and further education or employment

Skills for Kids also offers specific assessments for children requiring:

• Special provisions for examinations
• Assistive technology (Computer)
• Prescription of specialised equipment
• Funding for equipment and programming
• Access for environmental modifications in homes and schools with children who have physical disabilities
